Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic illnesses are the most difficult to diagnose, and it is even more difficult to determine their root cause. The problem with chronic illnesses is that they develop gradually, and wear down the body causing a slow degeneration to occur. It is only when these illnesses reach a critical stage that the symptoms become severe enough to alert a person that there is a malfunctioning in the body. Another frustrating aspect of chronic illnesses is that they create a consuming emotional preoccupation and a constant state of negative mental focus. These illnesses throw the entire body out-of-sync and affect the energy system on all layers: spiritual, emotional, mental and physical.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome:

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) first came to public attention in the mid-1980s. This syndrome is three times more prevalent in women than men. The physical cause of CFS is not known, however, researchers are investigating a variety of possibilities. One of the possibilities being researched is that CFS is an autoimmune disease that results from a person being infected with the Epstein Barr virus. Other possibilities include Lyme disease, allergies, hormonal imbalances, the fungus Candida albicans, chronic mercury poisoning from dental amalgam fillings, hypoglycemia or hypothyroidism. Consistent factors that appear to contribute to the susceptibility of CFS include emotional and physical stress.

The symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome are: debilitating fatigue, long lasting malaise following physical exertion, muscle soreness and weakness, sleep disorders (insomnia), migrating joint pain without swelling or redness, swollen tender lymph nodes, recurrent upper respiratory tract infections, intestinal problems, jaundice, anxiety, depression, sensitivity to heat and light, forgetfulness, confusion, inability to concentrate, headaches and recurrent sore throat.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is not a life threatening illness; however, it should be taken seriously as it can do severe damage to the immune system. It is not unusual for the symptoms of CFS to become more pronounced before improving. It is also important to note that while this illness appears to be psychosomatic; it is in actuality a malfunctioning of the physical body.

Energy Analysis:

Chronic fatigue syndrome develops as a result of prolonged stress created from unresolved emotional issues, primarily due to a person's inability to speak up for themselves. A consistent pattern of people who suffer from CFS is that they chronically feel incapable of challenging the source of their emotional distress. The result is that without speaking up for themselves, they cannot get emotional closure or gain a sense of control over their lives. They find themselves caught in a Catch-22, if they speak up then there is the potential for conflict and if they do not, then they carry around unresolved emotional burdens. Both situations cause a person to literally get "sick and tired" of the struggle and to exhaust themselves emotionally. In the human energy system chronic fatigue syndrome reflects this emotional struggle.

The physical body is very sensitive in how it responds to the signals it receives emotionally. Unresolved emotional issues weigh heavily on the body and can affect its ability to stay in sync, revitalize itself, and replenish its energy resources. The more a person struggles emotionally, the greater the demand for energy. This emotional struggle "wears down" the physical body and creates the constant feeling of fatigue. Even a person's self-talk will support being tired. For example they will say, "I am tired of always struggling", I am tired of relationships that are all give with no take", "I am tired of my life", "I am sick and tired of my job", and "I am tired of people always taking advantage of me".

When a person does not have an effective support system to help find resolution to emotional issues, then there is a greater tendency to exhaust their physical resources and carry within them unresolved emotional issues. To heal chronic fatigue syndrome, a person must be willing to change the chronic patterns of inner stress and effectively exert a controlling influence over their lives. This most often means confronting or releasing other people from their lives.

Chakra System* Analysis

Chronic fatigue syndrome causes imbalances in the physical and emotional layers of the energy system. Unresolved emotional issues create an energetic tension between the 2nd and 5th chakras. Caught in the middle of this emotional tension is the 3rd chakra that reflects the struggle by a weakening of the immune system.

    2nd Chakra
The 2nd chakra is the origin site of this illness. In the physical body, this chakra is associated with the pancreas and lower digestive system. Any imbalance in this physical site causes malabsorption issues, affects the pancreatic output of insulin and digestive enzymes and creates vitamin and mineral deficiencies. All of, which will effect the body's ability to create the energy, needed to sustain optimal physical activity. The 2nd chakra is what I call the human emotion chakra. It is associated with how we emotionally relate to other people. It is the power center that represents our need to emotionally control other people so that our emotional needs will be met. It is where we energetically house the emotional social conditioning we learn as children. In the childhood stage of our lives we are taught that showing emotions is not good and that there is a right way and a wrong way to express our feelings. The result of this conditioning is the tendency to hold back emotionally to minimize the potential for conflict, and conflict is bad. By holding back our emotions we frequently feel that we are being violated emotionally and we end up carrying unresolved emotional issues. We feel emotionally starved. The inability to speak up and challenge those who are causing our emotional distress is a 5th chakra issue.

    5th Chakra
The 5th chakra is the primary symptom site of chronic fatigue syndrome. In the physical body this chakra is associated with the thyroid glands, the autonomic nervous system, and teeth and gums. The thyroid is responsible for regulating the body's metabolic rate in two ways; by stimulating almost every tissue in the body to produce proteins and by increasing the amount of oxygen that cells use. When the cells work harder, the body organs work faster burning greater amounts of energy. The autonomic nervous system is responsible for keeping the body functioning within its natural rhythmic patterns such as the rate of heart contractions, the rate of breathing and the speed at which food passes through the digestive tract.

The 5th chakra is energetically associated with the power center for self-expression and our will power. When out-of-balance behavior becomes submissive, we become emotionally insecure. Life becomes a struggle as the feeling of being emotionally out-of-control takes over. Instead of speaking up and challenging, we create behavior that supports our social conditioning around not letting emotions show. We become vulnerable to creating behavior that is destructive to our overall well being. We become burdened and physically exhausted from the build-up of negative emotional energy.

    3rd Chakra
The 3rd chakra is the secondary symptom site. When the physical body suffers from prolonged emotional and physical stress, the immune system becomes tired and weakened. The result is the increased susceptibility to viruses such as Epstein Barr or upper respiratory tract infections. The 3rd chakra is energetically associated with the power center for control of self and our environment. If at any time our lives feel out-of-control, we experience emotional distress, and the 3rd chakra over reacts by causing physical stress. We literally burn ourselves out energetically and physically and become fatigued. This chakra is associated with the fear of rejection. And, the fear of rejection is the primary reason that people will not speak up for themselves.

Personality Color Susceptibility

The personality types who are most susceptible to chronic fatigue syndrome are Oranges and Greens . Both of these personality types use emotions as a means of making decisions, both dislike conflict and both tend to hold their emotions inside to avoid emotional vulnerability.

Case Study - Rosemarie (Orange)

As a child, Rosemarie was taught that putting the needs of others before her own was always the right thing to do. Her parents supported this belief by telling her how good she was to want to take care of other people and how nice she was because she didn't like to hurt other people's feelings. When she would display her emotions (usually through outbursts) she was scolded for thinking about herself first. As a result she has spent most of her life feeling emotionally starved. She became resentful that her life was always being controlled by someone else and blamed others for taking advantage of her. Throughout her life she consistently created relationships where her role was to take care of others and put their needs first. Consequently, she created behavioral patterns in which her own emotional needs were never being met, thus supporting her "chronic" feeling of being emotionally starve. She said many times in our session that she was tired of the struggles that life presented to her. Rosemarie's perspective on life was that it was an endless cycle of emotional turmoil and violation. The primary reason for her emotional struggle was due to her inability to speak up on behalf of her own needs or to express her emotions. This consistent pattern of behavior repeated itself until she got so sick and tired that she could no longer function.
